Young Vivie Warren has lived distant from her Mother all of her life. She has an excellent education, paid for by her mother's work. She barely knows her mother, much less what her mother does for a living. When Mrs. Warren comes to visit, Vivie discovers that her mother operates an escort service. Mrs. Warren wants to develop a relationship with her daughter and give her the benefit of her wealth. Vivie on the other hand must decide between protecting her career or becoming closer to her mother. Four men of various ages connection to Vivie, provide perspective on the two women. Shaw's play, banned from public performance for years, explores without judgement the choices women are forced to make in order to support themselves.
